In the Dark

Walking here with you

Between these walls

Of circumstance,

Treading the borderline,

I can feel the air

Growing dark and thick.

It scares me

How vulnerable I am

In your presence;

How much power you have

Over me,

My heart,

My future.

I dare not speak my mind.

I guard myself,

My heart,

My future.

I seek shelter from the darkness

Of uncertainty

And hide in the spotlight

Of conspicuousness and jest,

Praying for you

To read between the punchlines.

Tell me where I am.

Are we walking

On the same side of the wall?

Are we walking together?

Or apart but in the same direction?

Please don’t leave me

In the dark.
